Tax question

Is IRS Direct File Available? Status and Alternatives

IRS Direct File was a free tool, run by the IRS itself, that let eligible people prepare and file a federal return online without going through commercial software. It started as a limited pilot for the 2024 filing season and expanded for 2025, when it was available in a set of participating states and supported a limited set of tax situations.

Current status

Based on the IRS and Treasury statements and reporting we reviewed, Direct File is not available for the 2026 filing season (for 2025 returns filed in 2026). Whether a federal government-run filing tool returns in future years is a policy decision that can change, so check IRS.gov for current status before assuming either way. Anything we say here reflects what we knew at our last update date.

What Direct File covered

During its run, Direct File was designed for relatively simple returns — common examples included W-2 wages, limited interest income, Social Security, unemployment, and certain credits like the EITC and child tax credit. It did not support everything, such as many forms for self-employment or investment sales.

What to use instead

  • IRS Free File: guided software for people at or below the AGI limit ($89,000 for 2025 returns), with eight participating partners for 2026.
  • Free File Fillable Forms: available regardless of income if you are comfortable with forms.
  • VITA/TCE: free help from certified volunteers for eligible people.
  • State free-filing portals: useful for the state return; see our state guides.
  • Free editions of commercial software: for simple returns if you confirm what is covered.

If you used Direct File before

If you used Direct File for a previous year, your return data is not automatically moved into another service. Gather your documents and a copy of last year’s return, and choose a new option. Last year’s AGI is often needed to sign an e-filed return electronically, so keep your prior-year return handy. If you filed with Direct File and have questions about a past return, the IRS account tools can show transcripts; see how to get a transcript.

Why this matters for state filing

In 2025, a companion tool allowed Direct File users in some states to file a state return too. If you relied on that, check your state agency’s current-year free-filing options. Our state guides note free options where we have confirmed them.

Staying safe

Websites that claim to be “Direct File” but ask for payment or unusual personal information may be lookalikes. Always start at IRS.gov.
